She taught me to be tough, she taught me to care
She taught me to be myself, she taught me to share

She gave me hope when there seemed to be none
She held my hand when I thought I was the only one

She taught me to respect, first myself then the rest of the world
She told me it's okay to be vulnerable, but I also have to be bold

She taught me to be subtle, she taught me to be honest,
She taught me what to let go, she taught me in what to invest

She taught me to stand up for myself, she taught me to stand by friends
She taught me right and wrong, she taught me the importance of making amends

She never gave me directions, she let me find my own way
She took away my despair, she taught me that tomorrow's another day

She laughed with, cried with, screamed at me,
She agreed , she disagreed , she breathed with me

She listened to everything I said, no matter how absurd,
She's my teacher and my friend--but mostly mum's the word!
